We’ve Been Framed

Things are in motion at 20K Ophelia’s Home! Specifically, the motion of lifting walls up and framing a porch. The exterior walls have been framed and sheathed, and the north and south walls have been lifted into place.

This process was started by measuring and tracing out the stud placement on the edges of the subfloor and laying out all the timber before nailing them together. Occasionally nailing some timber to the subfloor then having to take them out was surely a great way to improve our nail-removing skills. Once the walls had been framed with the studs at 24” on center, and window and door openings were located and framed, the green layer of Zip sheathing was laid on top.

The walls were not the only thing to be framed, as the MEP team was hard at work framing up the porch which proved to be more tedious than expected. In order for the porch to create a level surface with the soon to come interior floor, the joists had to be shortened slightly to accommodate for the layer of wood that will create the porch surface.

Speaking of the porch! There was also some more development of the ideas about a solution for the porch entrance that came from a review with Andrew Freear, Elena Barthel, and assistant director of Tulane’s design build program Emilie Taylor Welty. After much discussion of the three options, which are angle, north, and tongue porch, the 3rd-years were able to narrow it down to the “tongue” option. In order to reach a final porch design, this iteration will go through another process of refinement in the upcoming week.

3rd-years signing off for a jiminy split, see you folks after spring break!

Back to the Drawing Board

It’s been an eventful week for the 3rd-years! Since Halloween review is fast approaching, they’ve been busy at work getting things ready in their quilting class, on site, and in studio.

For the quilt, each student finished the second iteration of their quilt squares which they arranged as a studio to craft the first iteration of their quilt! Now they know their final quilt top for Ophelia will look a little something like this:

On site, the studio’s tool trailer was moved in (yay!!!), and the team took care of other odds and ends – including cutting down limbs to make room for the trailer under a tree, reorganizing the wood stock pile, and removing the old septic line.

In studio, after drawing hundreds of different variations of Ophelia’s 20K floor plan it was time for the 3rd-years to consolidate their ideas and create a final floor plan! They studied multiple iterations of what could be the final plan and what those plans would look like in interior elevations and in section.

On Friday, the studio broke down into teams to study the final floor plan options. One team worked on drawing the different ceiling and wall/door alignments in elevation and section while the second team taped out a mock-up of the final plan underneath the fabrication pavilion.

The team mocks up the final plan under the fabrication pavilion.

After hundreds of drawings, hours of discussion, and a mock-up or two here and there, the students have finally decided on a final floor plan that they think is going to make an amazing home for Ophelia.

Water Lines and Tool Trailers and Batter Boards, Oh My!

It’s now the week after fall break and the 3rd-years are rested up and ready for the next phase of their semester! This week has been all about making sure the students have everything ready for when it’s time to start building.

First, the students had a much-needed conversation about their schedule and budget. They held a pull planning session to start making a schedule for the rest of the semester – will they stick to the schedule? Stay tuned to find out!

Next, the students worked together to get things ready on site by moving all their supplies and the leftover wood from Mrs. Patrick’s Home (last year’s project) to Ophelia’s site.

Over the next couple of days, the students broke down into teams to get the site and their tool trailer ready for when it’s time to build. A few of them focused on locating and shutting off the old water line on site. This team also dug up and capped off the old septic line and removed old tie offs for the trailers previously on site.

Another team worked hard to build the inside of the tool trailer with shelves for all their equipment and individual cubbies for everyone on the team.

The third team measured and cut all the pieces to make batter boards that the 3th-years will use to measure the height of the finished floor of Ophelia’s new home!

All in all, it was a productive week for the 3th-years on site and they are very excited and eager to break ground on Ophelia’s 20K soon! Just look at how excited they are!!!
